This call will become humorous in the event that the determination of the Party, the Red Army and the masses become steadfast in realizing the attainment of the strategic stalemate stage of the peoples' war in the next 5 years.

CPP condemns Nov. 15 Leyte massacre, urges investigation by joint GRP-NDFP committee

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) condemns in the strongest possible terms the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and its Philippine Army 19th Infantry Battalion for the Nov. 15 killing in Kananga, Leyte of one of the country's leading botanists and two of his assistants.

University of the Philippines lecturer Dr. Leonard Co and his assistants Sofronio Cortez and Julius Borromeo were killed after forces of the 19th IB mistook them for armed guerrillas of the New Peoples' Army (NPA) and fired at them while they were doing fieldwork at the edge of a forested area of Kananga in cooperation with the Energy Development Corporation (EDC). Two members of the team, Policarpio Batute and Ronino Gibe, survived the massacre, while three others--students undergoing internship--remain missing as of this writing.

The National Democratic Front-Eastern Visayas today condemned the massacre of a prominent botanist and his two assistants last Nov. 15, and pinned responsibility on the 19th IB, calling for its expulsion from the region for committing mass killings and other human rights violations for so many years. "The NDF-EV condoles with the families and friends of University of the Philippines professor Dr. Leonardo Co and his assistants, Sofronio Cortez and Julius Borromeo, who were indiscriminately fired upon and killed by 19th IB elements while doing fieldwork in Kananga, Leyte," said Fr. Santiago Salas, NDF-EV spokesperson.

The Valentin Palamine Regional Operations Command of the New People’s Army – FarSouth Mindanao Region claims responsibility for the disarming of abusive paramilitary units in Upper Bala, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur on the morning of 10 Novermber 2010. This tactical offensive yielded two high powered rifles, a 9 mm revolver and several 12-gauge shotguns – arms previously issued by the 39th IB to CAFGU and CVO elements to coerce the people into participating in the military’s desperate counterinsurgency measures. This tactical offensive is part of the NPA’s continuing efforts to maintain peace and order in its territories and to expose the AFP’s military operation and campaign of terror in the hinterland barrios of Davao del Sur.
